But that doesn't mean he thought those writings were canon. He used those references as a bridge to appeal to his audience because they were familiar with them. In the same way, just because Jesus used a metaphor from the Apocrypha, doesn't mean He was placing His seal of approval on them as inspired. He may simply have used it like Paul did, as a familiar reference to make a point. It would be unwise to make any further assumptions on Jesus or His reasons for using this metaphor.
